4Chan / Twitter values “For the lulz” nation who thinks Fox News is hilarious, a 78 year old “edge lord” leading the nation as a shit-bird Tweet king on the toilet is funny. As long as everything keeps people entertained with technology.
“Technopoly is a state of culture. It is also a state of mind. It consists in the deification of technology, which means that the culture seeks its authorization in technology, finds its satisfactions in technology, and takes its orders from technology.” ― Neil Postman, Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology, 1992
“What I had not realized is that extremely short exposures to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people.” ― Joseph Weizenbaum, MIT 1974
I mean you really can’t do much.
The only way democracy lasts or has any chance of survival, is government subsidized and or free college education with a robust public education. Which actual good public schools exist in what 15 states? Not a good metric.
So with ignorance and stupidity, we suffer.
Yes you can, Neil Postman wrote an entire book “End of Education” on what you can do.
School since year 2007 is not where people leann. People learn on Reddit and Lemmy and Twitter and Bluesky and Fox News. Neil Postman is an educator of educators and addressed all this.
We need to stop acting like Donald Trump at age 78 goes to a school. People learn from Fox News. And we need to stop acting like it (HDTV media and social machines) is not the education problem.
That’s where I have to disagree with you.
School since 2007? The point of school is to teach basic fundamentals of math, writing, reading which if anyone pays attention these days is how we learned.
Don’t tell me watching YouTube videos is how we should learn because the massive flaw besides countless other logical flaws is that you have to learn to read first and understand basic computer skills not too mention that being on yt alone is massive distraction.
Again education needs an overhaul no doubt, and should be shortened and not about tests. College/university as well.
