AVIF is pretty universally supported at this point.
JPEG XL just lacks browser support because Google, prefers to push their own .webp and Mozilla is not interested in supporting any non AI focused standards these days.

Even with the new spec PNG is far behind new standards like AVIF or JPEG XL.

Indeed. Google decided to fuck everyone over like always against the wishes of the main developer.
And yet, PNG has more support. If they start supporting the new spec, seems like an improvement to me.
