    Nihao, bitches!

It has happened to me on several occasions in real life over the past few years that someone will find out I’m learning Japanese and will just say “ni hao” completely unprompted, which always elicits a sharp spit-take type laugh from me, followed by me practically hearing the ellipsis in the other person’s brain until they softly say, “Oh… That’s the Chinese one, isn’t it…”

Another time, I believe in like 2023, one of my in-laws found out I was learning Japanese, and she just straight-up unprompted started saying like “chíng chòng dīng dǒng” in a very loud and exaggerated manner in the middle of a Christmas party in front of several small children… The past few years have frankly taught me not to look much up to anybody in my family, nor their friends.

I have a vibrant memory of my dad doing this while we were waiting for our food in a Chinese restaurant while the wait staff shot him dirty looks and my mom kept telling him they were going to spit in it.
