Apparently some people are convinced this is a real thing that will be announced any minute now to celebrate the game’s 25th anniversary. I looked into it and there seem to have been some accidental leaks in the past from Nvidia and the Epic Game Store that have suggested some kind of FF9 project is in the works. Some Industry Insiders™ have also “confirmed” that it exists. There’s also some sort of cartoon set in FF9’s world supposedly being made.
A lot of the things people have touted as evidence of Square Enix working on a remake recently seem to be just tweets or merchandise announcements simply related to the 25th anniversary though.
I haven’t really cared about whatever they’ve been doing with FF7 but I’d be curious to see how they’d handle a FF9 remake. I’m kinda dubious about SE being willing to invest the time and money for a full modern remake though. FF7’s popularity dwarfs 9’s and it still wasn’t enough to make Rebirth sell to SE’s stupidly high expectations. Didn’t FFXVI underperform too?
FFIX is, in my opinion, the best final fantasy game. I don’t trust SE to do anything good with it. I’ve not been happy with most mainline FF game since XII.
If they were to remake it, I don’t want a 1:1 remake with better graphics. I don’t think there’s any purpose in that
I think a new IX would really benefit from fleshing out more of the cast. In particular Freya, eiko, and amarant need some work. I’d even like to see Steiner get some more narrative.
The world of IX is a really defining feature. I’d like it if they could take an approach to it similar to 12 where there are lots of free roam sections or side content that allows you to explore or engage with the world more deeply.
But again, I don’t trust anything good to come from a remake.
I’m still waiting for the “announced” FF Tactics remake, though IX would be fun
There’s a lot of TALK about but nothing official.
I would rather them remake FF6, as Sakaguchi really seems to be open to making it better. Or at least he was reflecting heavily on it in his latest Fantasian.
Last I heard, there was a mod team that developed an absolutely gorgeous-looking tech demo of IX, and SquareEnix was receptive, but unwilling to commit the resources needed to adapt a full remake. Now there’s a new song recording that seems to indicate some sort of movement, and the Nvidia thing, but I’ll believe it when I see it while staying cautiously optimistic.
imo the FF7R treatment would be better utilized for an FF6 remake. It’s the closest thing to 7 in terms of Final Fantasy fan-hype and as good as the original is, it would benefit immensely from being translated to a high-def experience
Yeah, I think the game as it stands is also WAY less accessible than IX, even if only because it’s a 16-bit, aprite-based game - FFIX still looks good and plays well! FFVI not so much, because frankly it’s hard to get into the much more basic graphical presentation.
If they wanted FF7 Remake to sell at wildly high levels, they shouldn’t have changed the fucking game. I don’t want to buy a different game, if it was the same game I would buy it at $100 a fucking pop without a second thought though.
I’m sure if they did a 1:1 FFIX remake it would do unexpectedly well though. But I would be salty as hell they did that for 9 but not 7.
A lot of things they did in thr OG were due to the limitations of what they could do with tech at the time. Like art direction, gameplay, dialog, even fundemental mechanics.
Sterling did a bit on this (not FF) and why a 1:1 isn’t necessarily the best route.
To be fair, FF7R isn’t just the original game reimagined. Isn’t it also a sequel with some some sort of multiverse stuff going on?
With how convoluted and overwrought the expanded FF7 universe is there was probably no chance it was ever going to be a simple retelling of the original story.
Thankfully the FFIX doesn’t have tons of indulgent Nomura side projects crowding out the original game
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

I would honestly suggest getting your hands on the Steam version and installing Moguri Mod. Haven’t played it myself but it looks great from the videos I’ve seen and will probably be how I replay it in the future. It even fixes one of my biggest pet peeves from FF9’s rereleases by replacing the ugly new font with the one from the PS1 version.
spoiler
Probably no save states though
I don’t get how they keep making the same mistake of ugly fonts in Final Fantasy games re-releases This has happened like 3-4 times now.
Is this a FF reference?
I do still play the original but, you might remember, people have been hyping a FF7 re-release since PS2 launched. Once it was confirmed everyone I know and I were pumped to see an updated version of it even decades later.
Before Remake came out with a new story pretty much everyone wanted a 1:1 remake, then it was announced as a retelling and now people defend it by saying there’s no point for a 1:1. If there was no point to it and no one wanted a 1:1, then why did sales flop on the second installment? A 1:1 is exactly what fans wanted for so long and they fucked it up after having nearly 30 years to get it right.
You might be right people want a 1:1 remake. I think you’re wrong that it has any merit as to why they should do it. At least how it is now people can play both versions and get something different out of them and the people aren’t pretending the original doesn’t exist like they might with other games. The remake is treated as the separate experience that it truly is than something that’s supposed to overwrite the original.
I totally understand that, honestly, but the reality is that people were awaiting a 1:1 specifically for decades. No one had ever talked about wanting a different version of FF7. That alone is the reason to make it, that would’ve given them a huge profit victory from the game alone not to mention merch.
IIRC FF7 Remake sold gangbusters but Rebirth didn’t. I’ve seen people saying that was due to old fans getting their nostalgia fix/being disappointed by Remake (why is it three games?) and not bothering to show up for the sequel as well as it being a PS5 exclusive.
No fucking way is it going to be a 1:1 remake though unless it’s some kind of smaller release
They bloated the remake beyond reason and the plot ghost meta thing, actively ruined the narrative tension.
i really wish it was a smaller release cause holy hell they do not have nearly enough content to fit all they stretched it out to be.
Yeah, I’m one of those. I bought the first installment (already resentfully because, yeah, why three games after 30 years?) but didn’t want to continue supporting this when I found out it wasn’t even the game I wanted and required me to buy another $500 console. Just ridiculous.
And you’re right but FFIX 1:1 would be awesome though. I would buy it.
