I think you missed the third option: they are borderline illiterate and/or completely lacking in creativity, and are literally incapable of “reading into” anything beyond surface level, “powerful man blow shit up with his eye lasers wow so cool!” type thinking. It is beyond their grasp.
They don’t see or understand subtext… which becomes obvious when you see the media that is popular with these types of people.
It’s about 50/50 between:
They don’t see anything wrong with the things he did.
They haven’t watched the show and have only heard that he’s disliked by “liberals”, and assumed he’s great.

There’s some truth to this but let’s not act like Homelander being the bad guy was fed to us through subtext.
