Some questions I have:
- Would you be interested in doing a reading for this?
Obviously the focus of the book is trans liberation, but if you’re cis I highly encourage participating as well. The book covers topics concerning gender that apply to cis people too, so don’t think that only trans people would benefit from reading it. From the book:
And if you do not identify as transgender or transsexual or intersexual, your life is diminished by our oppression as well. Your own choices as a man or a woman are sharply curtailed. Your individual journey to express yourself is shunted into one of two deeply carved ruts, and the social baggage you are handed is already packed.
This is a book that really everyone here should read and it’s not at all difficult to get through.

The chapters are fairly short. Would it be best to do 2 chapters a week or 1? There are 8 chapters total.
-
What day works best for posting the threads? I was thinking saturdays but would like to hear other opinions.
-
What comm would be the best place for the discussion threads? I was thinking https://hexbear.net/c/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns but with another comm be more suitable? Maybe theory? Transby_liberation?

Any other suggestions for it?
I don’t know if I want to commit to participating in the discussion actively, but at the very least I’d be interested in reading along.
a user made an audiobook version of it a long time ago that might be useful https://hexbear.net/post/493194
Thanks for this!!!
sure
I would be interested! It’s been on my reading list for a while, and it’d be nice to both get a little push and be able to discuss it with people and get their insights.
My vote is also for one chapter a week to minimize both uptake and attrition. I’m sure I speak for many of us when I say it’s been a long time since I was regularly reading books, so getting through a relatively short selection can still be a challenge. As a bonus, it also makes it easier for people to join partway through.
This is a great idea. Add me to the ping list.
I don’t feel like I need this, being an ancient trans, but I would like to join and make more people because more people is more fun.
I think 2 per week is too much dedication and not enough space for thought to brew so 1 per week seems better.
I’d be interested! I’m cis, but have been wanting to delve more deeply into gender as a concept.
Awesome!! I think you’ll like this then. It’s not heavy gender theory or anything, but more of an introduction to gender and trans issues.
Sounds good!
As for recommendations, I’d do 1 chapter a week. People drop off hard on reading clubs in my experience, so lowering the barrier to keep up with discussion is a good thing. If people want to read ahead, they can, but by spreading it out to about 2 months, it keeps people engaged.
The biggest reason to go for 2 a week is if you want to follow it up, maybe with Lavender and Red or another book on gender, where you’ll want to cover a larger amount of material.
Saturdays are a good idea, IMO.
As for comms, I think c/theory is fine. I’ll pin the threads if you host it there, but I’ll let others say what they think, really I think any of the comms you listed are good!
