This idea that everything has to turn a profit is so toxic to a society. It has to die.

Important things cost money. That’s why we pay for them. You know what would make us poorer? Defending cultural institutions, privatising them, or trying to make them profitable. Cultural institutions are what make participating in a culture worthwhile.

“The vast majority of England’s biggest subsidised cultural institutions are now operating at a loss, including many internationally renowned venues and arts brands.”
