Femicide laws have evolved over the past 50 years, but significant gaps remain. Femicide is a gender-based crime, often linked to intimate partner violence. In 2023, over 51,000 women were killed, yet only 29 economies have laws addressing femicide, with protections covering only 11% of the world's women. Recognizing femicide in law is crucial for prevention and justice.
