I found in Kmart a circular hair control device - its a circle of zigzag plastic an inch or so wide and a bit stretchy, big enough to go around one’s whole head. I think its intended to hold back one’s hair with an Alice band over the top of it. Put it on around the neck, then slide it up and it holds hair back from the forehead and up off the neck. Front of hair is held sleek and smooth, then the rest of one’s hair runs riot behind it. Fairly comfy to wear, and you can put a bike helmet or hat over it if need be. Game changer for growing out hair past the annoying stage. And you can cover it with a ribbon or similar if you don’t like the look of it.
