A recent investigation published by the Texas Observer reports on collusion between armed white supremacist vigilante groups and law enforcement along the southern border, as part of Operation Lone Star. According to the article, members of these groups have been “filming themselves conducting patrols, taking photos of themselves alongside law enforcement, and sharing footage online to solicit donations, promote their work, and recruit new members.”

Many of these groups seem to have been inspired by remarks such as Texas governor Greg Abbott’s: “The only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border, because of course, the Biden administration would charge us with murder.”

Given that members of vigilante groups have been documented openly breaking laws in front of law enforcement with no consequences, it may in fact take federal-level intervention if their influence is to be curbed. Texas and Arizona law enforcement show no interest in doing so.
