I have met people who venerate these guys to an insane degree and it’s more than a little disconcerting. Like on its face it is a story that doesn’t ring with heroicism.

I’m maybe more amenable to the kind of arguments people make about “survival” when discussing contemporary troops being made about these guys but that’s also a big maybe. Still doesn’t make them overly worth venerating! Where’s your black Seminole merch queen!?!

I mean, if you wanted to venerate black soldiers there are many more worthy of praise than buffalo soldiers. Which were basically utilized as shock troops of the early empire, especially in America’s colonial aspirations in Cuba.

Just off the top of my head The Abraham Lincoln Brigade a volunteer group that fought against the fascist in the Spanish civil war, or the Harlem Hell Fighters who served with distinction in France during WW1. They would be particularly culturally significant as they helped introduce jazz to France.
