Explosions heard in Dzhankoy, air raid siren in Sevastopol, Crimean Bridge closed

Monitoring channels write about the missile threat and the work of air defense. The Dzhankoy checkpoint is closed. There is a smoke screen over the Crimean Bridge.

So that’s a bridge. They can get the coordinates very simply just from google maps. Ukraine jas access to modern western weapons which I assume are gps-guided. How effective really is a smoke screen unless Russia is able to jam gps signals over a 19km long bridge?

Problem is Ukraine actually wants to not injure civilians unnecessarily.

Sure they could just launch whatever to the bridge and fuck it up. But without being able to at least reasonably claim to confirm they minimized civilian casualties, it’s a big risk.

If Russian has closed the bridge, then Ukraine should be good to go now, right? One drone with thermal imaging to confirm there’s no remaining vehicles on the bridge, then it’s bombs-away.

With a thick smoke noone will be crossing the bridge, so it’s safe to bomb.

(/s but not too muchI guess)

You’re forgetting that Ukraine has successfully attacked the bridge twice already.

In October 2022 a bomb on a truck detonated, causing 2 spans to collapse and killing 5.

In July 2023 two sea drones targeted the bridge & killed 2 & injured 1. The two killed were a husband & wife. The injured one was their child.

True, though if you constantly cause civilian casualties you end up being in the same odor as Russia, or the us law enforcement.

Not really good look for a country needing the rest of the world’s assistance.

Traveling into a warzone… I mean yeah it sucks but mentioning they are a family is irrelevant.

The post I was responding to claimed the Ukrainians were trying to avoid civilian casualties. This clearly demonstrates that civilian casualties were involved.

They can try to avoid civilian casualties and still have civilian casualties…

For a major thoroughfare 3 casualties is extremely low, even for a multi car accident that’s low. You can throw shade on Ukraine for some stuff but clearly by every military definition they are actively avoiding civilian casualties.

Why you would even mention it when Russia is bombing hospitals and schools is … Either very clear or just wildly stupid.

yes Russia can jam GPS signals over large areas. Yes theres other methods in play.

Missiles can only do so much damage to a large structure like this bridge. IIRC, the Ukrainians have tried those before.

Even the famous truck full of explosives weakened the bridge, but it didn’t go down.

It would take an absolutely huge amount of explosives to take the bridge down.

Not really, it needs something very heavy moving very fast to hammer a few pylons 3- 4 pylons out from shore.

Infrastructure is surprisingly weak to kinetic impacts applied in the wrong direction.

Man… I am surprised it hasn’t happened yet.

You would think Ukraine has the tools and ability to do it.

It’s not for a lack of trying, but they have prioritised other things. But the more it seems as a prize target, the more likely it’ll get dropped because damaging Putin’s domestic reputation is paramount.

I think they organised other routes for logistics so it became less strategically important than it was earlier in the war.

Still though…I really want to see it gone. It’s a nasty symbol.

I’ve seen the argument that it is actually better to cripple the bridge than take it out completely. As it is, Russia still has to expend significant resources to protect a symbol that has very little strategic military value. Once it’s destroyed, those resources are freed up to use elsewhere. I think I agree with that. It can be destroyed later as a final triumph.
