It’s a turn-based traditional roguelike + dungeon crawler, i.e. there are no in-game permanent upgrades to make the characters stronger, and only you the player get “stronger” as you become more knowledgeable. If you are into that kind of game, this is absolutely one of the best I’ve played!
The developer Evan has been continuously updating the game for the past decade, with a new, sixth playable hero scheduled to release later this year. The game is also free and open source, so you can even play the full game for free. I bought the Steam version (and has sunk 100+ hrs into it) because it’s so rare for me nowadays to find a game I don’t get tired of after a handful of hours. (Not saying short games are necessarily bad though, some of my faves are very short too.)

My Freerunner attempt ended with the King (it’s also visible on the 11th place in the screenshot). I think my main problem was I didn’t realize you could create spells to grab ranged weapons (I just learned about this lol), so I was using the crossbow as a melee weapon during the fight.
you run from fight to fight, and by the time you encounter another mob you have the ability recharged
Ohh that makes a lot of sense! I’ll def keep your advice in mind when I try him out again :D
That’s my usual strategy w/ other weapons, but the crossbow kinda sucks as a melee weapon even after upgrading it to like +5 or something, so I can’t even clear the ghoul swarm with it in melee.
But how to use darts during boss fights, specifically the King fight? I tried the Crossbow once as the Freerunner and it ended miserably because I ran out of my six darts quickly after the fight started. It felt like I was using a Spirit Bow but with very limited ammo. Surely I’m missing something here?
You can use it to blast non-airborne enemies into chasms which instantly kills them. It’ll give you significantly less XP, but can get rid of problematic enemies real fast.
Still, it’s astonishing to be able to beat 9 challenges w/ so many self-imposed limitations!
