sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•A woman tried to call her mom in Iran. A robotic voice answered the phoneEnglish1·4 天前Not so sure about Iran. I have looked for unambiguous quotes from them but can only find kooky religious stuff about Mahdism which is kind of like extremist Christians with their second coming madness.
Well educated Iranians seem to be Atheist whereas even intellectuals in Israel can be right wing religious nuts.
Certainly Iranian proxy groups like Hamas have unambiguously calked for a global caliphate
“Hamas, which is widely recognized as an Iranian proxy, has leaders and official rhetoric that go beyond the goal of liberating Palestine and at times explicitly reference the ambition of establishing a global Islamic caliphate.“
“On December 1, 2023, senior Hamas official Fathi Hammad declared on Al-Aqsa TV that the Palestinians are preparing to establish an Islamic caliphate with Jerusalem as its capital. He and other Hamas leaders have repeatedly stated that the liberation of Palestine is just a prelude to bringing all Islamic countries—and eventually the entire world—under Islamic rule, referencing the conquest of Rome and America as future goals”
For the record, my housemate of two years in Australia is Iranian. I also make music with an Iranian in Mashhad via the Internet (we jam electronic music). He is an extreme loner but tells me what society is like there.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Signal – an ethical replacement for WhatsAppEnglish1·4 天前Thanks.
And I didn’t know Signal had spam filters. It makes sense to not make that open source.
In my circle of 20 there has only been one instance of spam over several years. 3 of us got the same message.

The fractional reserve is fixed AFAIK.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Operation Narnia: Iran’s nuclear scientists reportedly killed simultaneously using special weaponEnglish2·4 天前Wiki citation:
86. The United Nations verified the recruitment and use of 4 Palestinian children (3 boys, 1 girl) by Israeli forces as human shields (3) and by the Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades (1) as combatants in the occupied West Bank (3) and the Gaza Strip (1).
So that’s 4 examples of the IDF and 8 of the Palestinian militants. The numbers are not a scorecard though. These are just children and just the ones they had evidence of. Must happen a lot more, especially if you count adult shields.
I expect better from IDF since they represent a democratic government and so we should be hearing of the rogue soldiers being disciplined (jailed even). We rarely hear that.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Operation Narnia: Iran’s nuclear scientists reportedly killed simultaneously using special weaponEnglish32·4 天前Got a citation for that claim?
There are also claims of IDF sending civilians ahead of a raid in potentially booby trapped buildings.
But why waste our time on hearsay? It is hard enough examining all the documented evidence from each side.
In feel like there just aren’t enough of us trying to get at the truth. It is more like a game of football from the comfort of our Western homes where we encourage our team to keep going regardless of losses (on the ProPal side the encouragement for Hamas to not surrender is especially buzaare).
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto News@lemmy.world•72% of Americans Say the Rich 'Have Too Much' as GOP Pursues Another Handout for Billionaires1·4 天前The money supply is fixed. Government prints money but not to cover new jobs. It is all about transfer of wealth.
We could all be moderately wealthy if Billionaires were not a thing. Basic Income is perhaps feasible too.
Economist Gary Stevenson explains it well. He has over a million views of each video on YouTube.
He is working class as fuck but graduated from LSE & Oxford and then made millions since 2008 betting that inequality will rise and that most people will be worse off. He was the most successful trader for Citibank but quit in disgust and to reveal the scam to the public. Now with a best-selling book.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Operation Narnia: Iran’s nuclear scientists reportedly killed simultaneously using special weaponEnglish72·5 天前Going by this very targeted attack video, I find those numbers difficult to believe.
There just isn’t much explosive you can secretly pack into a pager. The strategy relied on body proximity.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•A woman tried to call her mom in Iran. A robotic voice answered the phoneEnglish11·4 天前Neither side seems interested in murdering everyone on the other side.
Iran’s intention is to eradicate a Jewish state in the Levant. Hamas have stated that they would repeat Oct 7 over and over (seems a stupid thing to say out loud even if one is on their side) and in fact their insane leadership called for world Islamist domination.
Whether we agree with the establishment of Israel in the first place or not, it aint going anywhere so to continue trying to eradicate it 77 years later exacerbates suffering.
Aboriginal Australians got a raw deal but are still doing better than Gazans because they didn’t continue warring. They are still fighting politically and rightly so.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Signal – an ethical replacement for WhatsAppEnglish11·5 天前They are monthly not daily popups. They are daily at the start kust to make sure you memorize your PIN, then they peter off.
However if you ignore a monthly one then it doesn’t disturb you until the next monthly reminder. What is the point of a PIN if it can be ignored?
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Operation Narnia: Iran’s nuclear scientists reportedly killed simultaneously using special weaponEnglish1114·5 天前The pager attack was pretty targeted. Very low percentage of civilians killed (unlike the percentages of Hezbollah attacks on Israel).
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto News@lemmy.world•72% of Americans Say the Rich 'Have Too Much' as GOP Pursues Another Handout for Billionaires1·5 天前Only Alaska has federal ranked choice voting and a Republican tried to repeal it., so I give you that one.
But check out the https://patrioticmillionaires.org/ site. I don’t think either party are interested in that (except maybe for Bernie, AOC and Warren - which I admit would make Dems slightly better).
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto News@lemmy.world•72% of Americans Say the Rich 'Have Too Much' as GOP Pursues Another Handout for Billionaires1·5 天前I can’t help but wonder if some thought it couldn’t get worse for them personally so they wanted to see the whole system crash and burn.
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto News@lemmy.world•72% of Americans Say the Rich 'Have Too Much' as GOP Pursues Another Handout for Billionaires2·5 天前It is a zero sum game. The rich are addicted to power over others despite data showing that even they would be happier in a more equitable society (see TED talk by Richard Wilkinson called “Spirit Level”).
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto News@lemmy.world•72% of Americans Say the Rich 'Have Too Much' as GOP Pursues Another Handout for Billionaires32·5 天前Same thing in terms of being bought by lobbyists (although Elon’s influence is unprecedented).
Same thing in terms of refusing to reform one of the worst voting systems on the planet.
Same in terms of insider trading (Trump is more blatant and doesn’t mind if he tanks the economy in the process).
Same in terms of ignoring https://patrioticmillionaires.org/
sqgl@sh.itjust.worksto News@lemmy.world•72% of Americans Say the Rich 'Have Too Much' as GOP Pursues Another Handout for Billionaires22·5 天前Dems downvoting you are ignoring why Trump won. At their peril.[Edit: I see in a later comment that you clarified and people here do get it.]
Dems laugh at his meandering speech but the MAGA’s appreciate he is not scripted and one actually can understand what he is on about. It looks demented on paper but it is actually how a lot of people speak. You don’t need to complete your sentence if you have got the message across . MAGA think we are stupid for getting confused with our comprehension.
In the GOP primaries he mocked his competitors on stage saying that he has given many donations to politicians and the favours will be returned, even the ones on stage with him. MAGA loved the openness of the corruption.
What I don’t get is why they thought he would “drain the swamp”?
Cadlillac agrees with Trump. Slave labour is what makes America great and the slaves love it apparently.
sqgl@sh.itjust.workstoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•How long will people be in denial that america is now a fascist regime? You all really going to wait until trumps third term until you come to terms with it, arent you?1·6 天前Unfortunately Americans are not reading this thread :(
So MMP solves the problem, yes?
Ranked choice with a single member is better than FPTP.
5 candidates is closer to proportional but it is flawed because it is “low resolution”.
One could theoretically have a system to vote for hundreds/all seats for finer resolution but MMP is a tried and tested way to achieve the same.
We have come full circle to my initial comment…
Ranked choice allows for coalitions like in AU.
Maybe you mean Multi Member Proportional voting like NZ and DE. That is the best system but complicated. US cannot even deal with converting to metric so MMP would result in exploding heads.
sqgl@sh.itjust.workstoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•How long will people be in denial that america is now a fascist regime? You all really going to wait until trumps third term until you come to terms with it, arent you?1·6 天前I don’t think you understand the Australian Senate voting system or Tasmanian lower house or the MMP of Scotland, UK, DE.
They all have ranked choice but are tweaked to be proportional too.
MMP makes it proportional by also giving you a party vote which determines what proportion of seats that party should hold so that you don’t get a situation like you described in Australia’s last election. Better to watch a 2 minute video on it.
MMP is the most accurate/fair proportional system but more complex.
Am no expert but didn’t the money come from the banks virtual reserves? In which case the total money in the economy hasn’t changed.
Before the house purchase it would have been in other investments, no?
