In my opinion they should be appointed and be accountable to the law. There should be good oversight, and an independent body that investigates allegations of misbehaviour. Elections would just make it a popularity contest.

Something else is going on with phones. There are many models in the mid and low range, but extremely few small models.
I have a 6.8" Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (overdue for an update), and it comfortably fits in my pants’ pockets. I don’t know what kind of tight pants or minuscule size you wear, but for most of us it’s a non-issue.
It’s what the public wants. If small phones would sell better, they would make them.
It’s not that they want to spoonfeed political ragebait specifically, I think. They want eyes on their ads, because that generates revenue. It’s just that political ragebait keeps many people more engaged. More views = more ads seen = more money. Means to an end. It’s a very cynical worldview.

As long as one uses the open source version without paying money, it is fine I guess. But know that this is a Russian product, under a Latvian and now a Singaporean holding company to avoid Western sanctions against Russia.
