Bigmode is fine, but… Slightly controversial opinion here - I don’t actually care that much for indie games. I think they are healthy for the gaming ecosystem, and certainly there have been indie games I’ve played in the past that have absolutely blown my socks off, but I usually just wait for someone to tell me if there are any indie titles out there worth playing. I wouldn’t watch his channel just to get that info.

Member Thunderf00t? Had to un-sub after he went full misogyny during gamergate, and I’ve popped in since it’s not gotten any better it’s still him doing the same shtick hasn’t evolved even a little… Usually about Elon Musk, which sounds like it would be good content, but not when you exposed your biases and don’t change anything.

I was a teenager when he made the turn and started “owning” feminism. I sat there thinking that all his criticisms where not only adressed by femenist writers 40 years ago, but often even integral parts of some strains of femisms, and i had just begun reading entry level stuff on the subject. That’s when i learned what a unintellectual dunkhead he really was.

And the next five videos I watched had no substance whatsoever to them. He was just repeating the same debunking over and over. I don’t think I even got down to the point where he was spouting misogynist bullshit.

For a while I thought that he hadn’t changed all that much, and while I still mostly do think that, what broke the camels back for me to give them up (and I guess GN and Louis Rossmann as collateral) was when the PayPal Honey thing came up, what was at worst a bullet point in the pre-amble to the main story became the story, they basically all spent a month and change throwing vague jabs at each-other in turn shoving the actual, important story of PayPal Honey scamming customers and shopkeepers that they were supposed to be focusing on out of the way.

I still mostly do think that

Yeah, he hasn’t changed much. We know a little more about him and that changes things.

FWIW, I think the allegations are “mostly unfounded”. I think he does work people a bit too hard, which I don’t REALLY care that much about. Him hiring a CEO to manage things he was shit at was probably the smartest thing he’s ever done.

I’ve seen plenty of people complaining about going up to meet him and him going why are you important and why would I want to talk to you? Self admitting no friends. He’s probably either a narcissist or a sociopath in a personality suit.

I stopped watching regularly after the 17th video of them installing shit in his Mc Mansion turning everything into a write-off. I was still listening to WAN show once in a while to catch up with tech news, even if he has stupid takes, it was still getting me the news. Once the GN stuff started , I just turned off the TV. He’s not wrong, but he’s an asshole and goes to great lengths to pick small details to be correct. Yes, he should have done a follow up when he dropped honey like he did when he dropped a VPN sponsor. Absolutely. OR he could have just responded to GN and said my lawyers said to leave it alone. Nobody really cared. But the back and forth whining, I don’t care to watch either of them anymore.

Does anyone know any long-form tech news creators? I need something that’s about an hour long.

    Honestly, James Stephanie Sterling.

I had been following them since The Escapist days, but a few years ago I just couldn’t do it anymore. I was only interested in their Jimquisition stuff, and that had gotten really samey week over week.

It felt extra bad because this was after they had already lost like 20% of their subscribers for other reasons. I really hate that I might be lumped in with all those lovely folks when my reasons for leaving were entirely separate.

I still appreciate their message, though. I still think the Digital Homicide saga is one of the more interesting Internet dramas I’ve been witness to. And I still check in from time to time, mostly for their year-end lists and if something specific has happened in the gaming industry that I want their opinion on.

What I’m trying to say is, thank God for JSS, but only in small doses for me personally.

I’m in the same boat. I quit watching right before they came out as trans because their videos were the same thing every week. “Video game industry bad, publishers bad.” Which is a message I agree with, 100%, but when that’s literally all you say in every video its hard not to lose interest.

I forgot about them after that for a few years and was admittedly surprised by the change. Things seem to be rough for them lately, getting a divorce and moving to a new city right before COVID. I want to support them, but I watched their latest videos and it was exactly the same as before I quit. Nothing content-wise had changed.

I think a big part of that is that video game criticism really has evolved since then. Folks like shaun, hbomberguy, and many others share the same philosophy and ideas as JSS, but offer so much more depth than the “video games bad!” ranting that JSS has never been able to get beyond.

You could really feel JSS backslide on the podcast too. It became really evident that Laurakbuzz was carrying more and more of the weight of the cast, and JSS acted like they didn’t even want to be there, even leaving partway through some episodes.

I’ve been off the JSS train for a while now.

Para social relationships are hard. You think you get to know someone over the years watching their videos. I would even watch the videos he would put on his daughter’s channel. The videos of him just cooking.

I thought he was a smart guy even with some of his gruff persona.

Oddly enough, one of the first cracks in that facade was a BOLTR video taking apart a Hitachi wand or knockoff. He was so weirdly prudish about the idea of a woman actually using one in a way that didn’t feel like a joke. But I convinced myself it was probably a joke, because…why would he be weird about that?

But the trucker protest videos hit me like a cement truck. It actually really bummed me out. I texted my dad and he said something to the effect of, “Oh well, his videos have been shit anyway.”

I guess the votes so far disagree with you, but I could see your icky feelings coming from the same stuff that I perceive with the “walking brand.”

Everything is planned and rehearsed. He reminds the viewer repeatedly how he can be trusted. But it still feels like every word was passed through a committee to make sure nothing bad leaks out.

In my social circles I’m the fun parent that the kids like to play with, and maybe some acquaintances have gotten creepy vibes on occasion, but that’s more a reflection on society at large and how fear and negativity sell news. Nothing that can’t be solved with transparency and consistently just being a decent person.

I generally prefer it if YouTubers can self-fund based on merch, as opposed to hawking shavers, VPNs, and overpriced TV dinners. That said, the drop in quality has been noticeable from that point on. The drone defense video was particularly noticeable for being military propaganda.

If you intentionally turn on your sprinklers as a deterrent, and it does damage to a person or property, you’d be liable for that.

What if someone had important papers that you ruined. Or you broke their non-waterproof phone? What if someone was stepping off the sidewalk to let a wheelchair pass and you just doused them and the person in the wheelchair?

What if your automated sprinkler starts spraying the EMTs or Firefighters coming to help you cause you fell in your bathroom and can’t get up? What if it shorts out the Lifepack they were going to use to check your heart and deliver an AED shock, and now someone died?

Automated booby traps are always bad because you can’t judge the intent of the person, or animal, that might trigger it.

The problem is that the site offers very little in the way of discoverability and differentiation. You’re not even getting to the free stuff without a CC enabled acct.

If someone just opens an account there and shows up it’s not enough. They have to pop up in social media and engage with people. Hey I’m fun, I’m over here and I’m worth the time and money. They have to know their market and clientele and drag them in.

This was me with Ethan Klein/H3H3 over the past ~14ish months. Their podcast content used to be lighthearted Internet drama with funny soundbytes, but now the dude is having a major crashout about Gaza after rotting his brain with Israeli state propaganda media coverage. He’s always been an out-of-touch rich asshole, but now he’s so far out of pocket it’s unbearable to watch.

h3 is an incredibly interesting part of internet fandom/history. my phones about to die but if anyone is into it, i’ve “personally been there” since the very early days of their channel and think i have a decent perspective on the entire dynamic here, i might do a little actual, extensive write up in an edit here when i get home later.

i find h3 is fun to discuss as throughout his history on the internet he’s unique in of that he has entirely abandoned his audience multiple times. on the outside he’s a hypocrite (which is definitely true don’t get me wrong), but i think “inside” it’s a more machievallian and sinister sort of thing. frankly ethan and hila not only do alt-right dogwhistling better than anyone else; they invented a whole new technique. idk what to call it. but their snake-y nature lets them subvert typical premonitions and community norms time and time again and infiltrate way further into communities any other alt-righter would get nowhere near as close into the spheres of.

I think h3 is kind of a hidden nexus of fringe->main stream internet culture throughout the last like 15 years. Every wave Ethan has ridden has never been the main thing, it’s always right on the periphery of mainstream internet culture. That way he has cultivated a tiny amount of fans from every wave but never enough to get him into the public eye, and as a result everyone who knows him thinks they know someone “under ground” and he doesn’t shy away from that branding.

I don’t think it’s Machiavellian. I think it’s more just that Ethan has always held incoherent views (like everyone in the world) and his brand is to be unapologetically opinionated, so now that he’s dug his heels in on Gaza there’s no moving him until he has fully crashed and burned.

I mean he’s Jewish and his wife is from Israel, they have family members or at least know people personally who are in Israel and have their whole life, so the propaganda they’ve been fed is ingrained in their family identity.

It’s not an excuse, it’s sad to see, but as you pointed out he’s always declared himself a “capitalist” and has taken some pretty right wing positions. It’s just to say it’s not intentional, just a stupid dude who doesn’t work to hard to form opinions about stuff. I wouldn’t say this about every grifter, it’s just that H3 started out much more innocently and I don’t think they spent a decade keeping up a ruse like that I think it was genuine. I mean you really think he was doing Vape Nashe videos concocting how he was going to infiltrate internet culture to push right wing propaganda?

They recently had a kid, all Hasbara had to do was give them a couple mil contract to help their kids future in exchange for taking a side on an issue he never really cared about or brought up before October 7th. The ol’ “I have kids to take care of” spiritual bypass is a powerful excuse for going along with atrocities, 99% of westerners practice this every day.

Their beliefs don’t make any sense no. But it’s still true that they hold them.

After much pondering of this mystery, I’ve found the likely explanation to be that they are less pro communism than they are anti the USA. And that their thinking is firmly rooted in cold war propaganda.

The West Bloc is the source of all evil, so anyone the USA supports is evil and anyone who oppose them is good. Russia must be justified in their invasion because it is opposed by the West.

I’m seeing this play out on the Hasan Piker side of things, and it’s outrageous but also completely hilarious that Ethan will not have a conversation with Hasan or Sam Seder about Gaza. The propaganda of the State of Israel, and plain old sunk cost fallacy has left him paralyzed as a liberal. I hope he doesn’t stay in that place for the rest of his days because it’s destructive, but some people have to bottom out before they can come up for air. I just hope that means all the hate and trouble both sides of the American political divide give him doesn’t lead to anything drastic.

Hasan is absolutely not audience captured. He sticks to his morals, and does not change his views to suit his audience. He whips them into shape instead, and has conversations/debates with those in his community that disagree with him in order to get them to see his side of things.

Hasan has barely covered this Ethan shit in the past year and a half! Instead, Hasan has been covering news that actually matters like the peril of the Palestinian peoples and Trump’s lunacy in public office. Ethan is the unhealthy one, as can be seen by all of the subscribers he’s lost over the last year and a half, and the responses his dwindled audience leaves on the H3H3 subreddit pushing to leave the Hasan drama alone.

Ethan is confused and is falling into a very toxic trap. He’s cozying up to a liberal content creator that has sexually harassed multiple women in the past, and is currently undergoing a suit for using revenge porn to get women to submit to him. These are not the kinds of people I would want a progressive advocate like Ethan to hang around.

Also, Hasan does not lie. He uses facts and statistics. He spends a lot of time combating the lies of Trump and his party, and of the Democrats because they are not so pure as people think.

Hasan only has a platform because of the Twitch subscribers that give him their money on a monthly basis. He does not grift to the right by accepting money from corporate donors or benefitting from the conservative-laced algorithms on modern day social media platforms. He is a leftist, and with those views in today’s age, almost everyone on the political spectrum is against him. It is not sad that he’s gotten this big. He saw 300k+ people watch his stream on the night of the 2024 US General Election. Hasan has built up his community over many years by being honest, staying true to his values, and not budging when it comes to external influences trying to silence him. I find Hasan quite inspirational in this way.

What’s sad is the state of the American government, the conservatives that are destroying it, the liberals that are allowing it to happen, the absolute void of American class consciousness, and yes the poor, pathetic attempts by Ethan Klein to try to smear Hasan when Ethan’s the one with skeletons in his closet.

Hasan doesn’t lie?? Really?? Look, it’s not intentional, like malicious lies but holy hell is the man uniformed on… Everything. Yet he speaks with so much confidence. He repeats so many Russia talking points when covering Ukraine (not to even mention that time he outright said Russia had a right to invade Ukraine). Or that time he called the jdam hitting a hospital in Gaza killing 500 people only for it to turn out to be a misfired rocket hitting a parking lot. But he’s so confident. All the time. Give me a fucking break. Not to mention his toxic community and fans (Frogan) saying the most despicable shit ever. They are not healthy people and it’s all a big performative joke.

There are hours of YouTube videos disproving Hasan lies. And no, before you jump to hit reply, it’s not “clipped out of context”. I’ve watched all the context.

Also, the guy doesn’t do debates any more because he’s a whiny loser who cries because he can’t spend five minutes to do the most basic of basic research before forming an opinion.

not to even mention that time he outright said Russia had a right to invade Ukraine

Hasan has since said he was wrong on that point, and has since retracted said opinion and instead argued for the sovereignty of Ukraine as any other nation state, including Palestine. He reiterates this at least on a weekly basis to correct people like you that show up in the chat of his Twitch channel.

The fact that you’re using this example as a way to discredit Hasan however is demonstrative of how emotional you’re approaching this situation and how little you’ve done your own research to double check your views over time.

Or that time he called the jdam hitting a hospital in Gaza killing 500 people only for it to turn out to be a misfired rocket hitting a parking lot.

If you’re talking about the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital explosion, then the jury’s still out on exactly what happened. Neither Israel, Hamas, nor the PIJ have provided visual evidence of what may have caused the hospital explosion. We won’t know what happened unless an independent organization like the UN can go there (and be safe to do their investigation, although Israel has broken this accord many times now). It also appears that the main missile people claim caused the hospital explosion has been debunked.

Have you asked Hasan recently what he thinks on the matter: to double check and/or correct your views? Do you acknowledge that early on in the Gaza War, things were messy, and what Hasan and other might have believed at one time could have changed as new evidence presents itself? Does your world view allow for progress, or are you a moral conservative that lives in some crystallisation of the past?

But he’s so confident. All the time.

Because he has to protect himself and his community on an increasingly frequent basis due to him and his community being in the minority, and when it comes to people like you espousing caricatures and false perceptions of their opinions on the matter. Are you of a minority? Which one? Do you have your life exposed to the broader public on a daily basis, and are forced to stand your ground multiple times a day?

Not to mention his toxic community and fans (Frogan) saying the most despicable shit ever.

Are you referring to when Frogan and her Arabic friends did a tier list of who can say the word “Habibi” (Arabic for “my love”) or not? And if they qualify, they get a “Habibi” pass? A concept called racial passing where members of a certain race wished to be seen as belonging to a different race, and to obtain that race’s “pass”? And how they called the lowest tier “Sabra”, in relation to the Israeli hummus company?

Sabra isn’t the best hummus for starters. Some people refer to it as the McDonald’s of hummus, where there are many better alternatives. The name Sabra refers to the Sabra and Shatila massacre in which IDF-backed forces killed 1-4k Palestinians and Lebanese people’s. Many people and organizations have chosen to boycott Sabra because the company’s holding company directly supports the IDF’s military. I think it’s fair to call the lowest tier of person to receive a Habibi pass Sabra because said company in part funds a genocide. This is akin to calling that person a Nazi.

They are not healthy people and it’s all a big performative joke.

Have you watched Ethan’s content? Have you seen Ethan dismiss Hasan’s requests to talk about their issues in real time? Because all Ethan does is try to clip Hasan out of context so he can get people less involved in the context of the situation to agree with him and come to his side.

              Start Edit:

Since when was it healthy for a person to have a disjointed conversation with someone like Ethan does with clips? Are we trying to normalize that behavior? What if you did that in real life? Would people treat you weirdly if you popped in and out of their life, quoting them incorrectly? Seems to me that would piss off a lot of people, and that surely shouldn’t be the way we conduct our society if we wish to make moral, epistemological, and metaphysical progress.

              :End Edit

There are hours of YouTube videos disproving Hasan lies.

Yeah Ethan’s main video has been debunked.

              I’ve watched all the context.

If you did, you’d already have all of the answer to my above questions. But you retain old news because you don’t keep us with Hasan’s content, and likely insulate yourself in Ethan’s echo chamber.

Also, the guy doesn’t do debates any more because he’s a whiny loser who cries because he can’t spend five minutes to do the most basic of basic research before forming an opinion.

Every time Ethan has called Hasan out of asked Hasan to watch the video, Hasan has said that he’d be willing to do a live debate and get the facts straight. Ethan every time has been a coward and refused to talk to Hasan live. Oh, and Hasan does debate. All Ethan does is shrivel up in his bubble and hide.

There are WAY better leftie content to follow on YT/Twitch. Start with Loner Box maybe. Anyone really.

You’re missing the forest for the trees. The cherry picked examples are not at all interesting or what I’m referring to.

It’s wonderful that he’s since retracted his position on Ukraine. It’s wonderful that he’s changed his tune on the hospital bombing. That’s not the issue.

                The problem is the pattern.

He jumps to conclusions that fit his narrative and speaks with extreme confidence on things he knows almost nothing. It’s strange, because he has a poli Sci degree. But the most research I’ve seen him do on stream is read Twitter headlines.

I don’t care for Ethan either. I’m not interested in defending him. But Frogan has said WAY more despicable things than the Habibi thing. That’s not even relevant. Frogans charged language earned a temp ban on Twitch. The way she also called Ethan throughout the fallout was also despicable. But hey, it’s just Hasans community. He has no control over it, right?

Also, Hasan can’t handle the slightest criticism. After he botched that trans debate, a trans person in his chat mentioned some of the things he got wrong. What was Hasans response: he tells that person that he hopes they unalive themselves. Wow. Let’s keep simping for this wonderful individual.

Or that time he endorsed killing babies because after all, even babies of Israeli settlers are also occupiers. Barf.

We haven’t even scratched the surface.

Should I go on? Do you see the pattern now?

I don’t watch Ethan because I don’t like him or care for him. He’s got nothing interesting to say. But my god, do we have to simp for Hasan? Is this the best we got in the twitch political streaming world? Come on…

I have to admit that I’ve only been following Hasan for a little over a year.

I have not seen this pattern you speak of.

He makes conclusions based on political events that happen daily because that’s his job. What’s unique about Hasan though is that he’s willing to update his views over time as new evidence emerges, unlike the MSM.

I’ve seen Hasan do literal journalism on stream, like interviewing the imprisoned firefighters of California during this most recent fire disaster or attending protests and rallies in person, platforming leaders of those movements to amplify their message and cause. I’ve seen Hasan screen documentaries about unions and genocides. I’ve seen Hasan interview US senators, union leaders, and local government representatives across the country to get to the bottom of charged issues (like the Venezuelan apartment gangs story leading up to last year’s election). Hasan may be resistant to covering other social media sites, but he has good reason to stick to Xitter: Elon Musk and a growing fascist movement online are now using that platform to voice their bigoted views. Why run away from that to other forums if Hasan wanted to use those fascist talking points as examples to argue against? Might it be the case that Bluesky, having more strict content moderation, wouldn’t present the same opportunities to dispel myths and dunk on Nazis?

I used the Habibi thing as an example of how people, including Ethan, can take things out of context very quickly. And just because Ethan criticized Frogan for using Sabra as an almost slur doesn’t mean she didn’t have good reason to do so.

What other things do you take issue with that Frogan has said in the past? The soldiers with PTSD issue? How she condemns soldiers that choose to and want to fight the USA’s oftentimes unfounded wars? And her forgiveness to those soldiers that have remorse for fighting for the USA? If you don’t agree with this point, then you are still telling yourself the myth about American exceptionalism.

Do you take issue with how Frogan called her therapist a Zionist, when that’s what her therapist said she was? What about when Ethan took this event out of context and ran with it, assuming that Frogan called her therapist a Zionist, implying some sort of racialized hate? What about all of the despicable and vile shit that Ethan and Hila have said towards Frogan and others? What about those of the H3 community that have come out in direct opposition to Ethan and Hila for their completely unacceptable views towards Palestinians?

Oh, and are you talking about the 30 day ban Twitch placed on Frogan and others who led the Habibi/Sabra panel? That same panel that was allowed to happen at TwitchCon, which was vetted by Twitch ahead of time, and only after the fact Twitch decided to ban are receiving push back from online grifters? And why is this ban singled out, when as Frogan says, people on Twitch are banned for less time if they say pro genocide shit?

He botched the trans debate? Do you mean the debate Hasan had with Christian Walker, son of 2022 Georgia US Senate frontrunner and conservative Herschel Walker? The same Christian Walker that said that “college is a four year vacation” and who would glaze over any time Hasan would bring up facts/statistics or make logical arguments in favor of upholding the rights of trans people? The debate that basically proved that CW doesn’t really believe his anti-trans views, and only does so for clout? The debate where Hasan and his friend Felix spent hours up on hours to try to unpack and get to the bottom of CW’s beliefs, only for CW to be a contrarian and negate every single one of Hasan’s points? It was quite immature of CW to voice those opinions imo.

And are you referring to how Hasan banned someone after the debate for criticizing his trans views and comparing him to an actual bigot, Vaush? After Hasan demonstrated in real time what it meant to be a trans ally for hours upon hours? And how Hasan unbanned that same chatter after learning that they were trans and has since made amends? Would you take criticism well after being in a fight mode for hours on end? And would you unban someone after learning that your behaviors were unfounded? Would you go back and try to fix your mistakes, something that Hasan clearly does?

When did Hasan advocate for killing babies? It seems like you’ve fallen for the clipbait chimp shit from Ethan where he used a clip of Hasan laughing at Al Jazeera’s use of the phrase “offensive propaganda message” referring to the billboard showing Benjamin Netanyahu looking like Count Dracula and calling him out for killing babies. Hasan laughed because that Al Jazeera was putting this fact lightly and implying that this billboard would appear offensive and perhaps untrue or at the very least extrapolated to certain individuals who are partial to Israel. It’s beyond offensive that Israel killed primarily women and children in Gaza. It’s unacceptable. And it’s despicable that Israel spread the lie about Hamas decapitating infants. Netanyahu should go to jail for these acts. Hasan wasn’t advocating for the killing of babies. He was agreeing with Al Jazeera in that Israel’s actions were demonstrably evil.

You are so wrapped up in your own bubble reality that you are unwilling to suspend your ego and actually learn something for once. Jfc

I think it depends on which definition of pedophile you’re using. If you mean the act of abuse, then the fame gave them the opportunity and unless pre crime is wrong they weren’t pedophiles prior to the act so in some sense it did make them a pedo (but obviously they’re still responsible for their own actions). If you mean the mental disorder of being attracted to minors, then it’s likely they always were, I don’t think fame would make you suddenly desire that.

I’d imagine it’s always been there, but their fame gave them access to a devoted fanbase willing to do anything for them.

        And then things just devolve…

Probably caused a feedback loop. He could have grown out of being a douche, but his audience was built on him being a douche and fed that behavior.

So many of these early youtubers gave me bad vibes turned into shitheels later on doesn’t surprise me.

Rageaholic is one that i got tired of.

Found his videos from searching about iron Maiden and Yngwie malmsteen. But he doesn’t even talk about music any more.

    Purely a libertarian commentator now.

“Hey George, like and comment on my videos again.”

“Sure, Lenny, I’m gonna write a real nice comment on your latest video right now.” *sniffle*
