    Actually, it does
    You can control these lines
    With rhythm and meter
    Bringing forth abstract concepts

    Dropping a carriage return
    Is dropping a mind return
    And slicing prose just a bit
    Is the epitome of sharp wit

    Sometimes there’s rhymes
    Sometimes there’s not
    But to engage with poetry
    Is to be open to anything

      To be honest I think both of you are right. It’s definitely a tool that can be used very deliberately and to great effect, but it’s also over-employed by poor writers in order to make their creation more “poem-like”. I have seen plenty of examples of both kinds.
