More scary Islamophobia by choosing to use the spooky Arabic word. A “fatwa” is just a legal ruling interpreted by religious leaders. You may as well call it a verdict. You can have a fatwa towards one couple’s divorce. You can issue fatwas on car traffic. On food. Elections. Fire departments. It’s just scholars sitting down and saying “How should we interpret our religion regarding this issue?”

But that’s not why the media uses the term. They’re doing it to deliberately obfuscate what’s being said and trying to make westerners associate “fatwa” with murder and assassinations. That way, when their audience encounters the term from other sources (like if they saw a post on the official Iranian Twitter account), they immediately think those dastardly brown people are plotting to kill people.

What’s even more bullshit is Persians aren’t Arabs. They speak Farsi, not Arabic. That doesn’t stop the media from latching scary words their story to reinforce orientalism.

It’s more like a verdict or ruling. For example, Muslims can only declare war if Muslims have been killed or if Muslim property has been destroyed. They also aren’t supposed to declare war against other Muslims.

So when the Israelis fired missiles on Iran with American weapons, it becomes a question of how involved is the US? Isreal has met the criteria according to the teachings of Muhammad and the Koran. The fatwa is issued here where scholars consult the Koran and each other over whether or not declaring war on the US would violate the law. The Iranians have concluded the US does meet the criteria because the US is acting through Isreal as its proxy.

This is what’s been said by their officials and why the announcement. It’s similar to the US Supreme Court ruling whether or not drone strikes are constitutional and within the president’s power, then making an announcement for or against.

Remember a year ago when a kid shot at Trump and like 60% of the country said “well he’s got a point tho”

Yeah, kinda weird reddit takes exception to this given how much of a lib place it is. Like even as a lib who believes in “decorum”, shouldn’t you be understanding of the fact that someone who just got their country attacked by a US proxy wouldn’t take too kindly to the heads of states complicit in the assault?

How is this a bad thing?

Unless they’re trying to say that this justifies Trump’s actions

Which is dumb because Trump is just going to do what he’s planning anyway

You don’t have to be nice to people who are trying to kill you and keep threatening to kill you

who are trying to kill you

They’re acting like Trump and Netanyahu wouldn’t have every member of Iran’s government assassinated if they could. Typical NATO brains, thinking they can kill other country’s military officers and politicians without retaliation.

they think anything muslim leaders do is facepalm and cringe. the top comment was something about “put all three of them in a room and let them fight it out”. i would bet money that person has no idea who this even is and couldn’t tell you anything about him, his views, or iran

they probably think anything a religious leader does is facepalm and cringe, a pretty safe bet. they should be treating this fatwa like the times the western media glazed frankie for dragging the church into the 18th century.

i feel like if the pope so much as toothlessly criticized trump then liberals would get down on their knees and start licking the feet of the church but the grand ayatollah says some real ass shit and people wanna act like its bad

they would also rather he call upon muslims to vote against him trump (even tho he cant run again anyway)
