Ah but see, saying that it depends on investigation implies he would end his support for Robinson under certain conditions, and we all know he has no problem with what Robinson said (even if he genuinely doesn’t know what was said). More importantly, his supporters actively support those things. They also have no problem with him being uninformed.
Therefore, he’d rather try to stall until the next controversy (which will probably be next week’s VP debate) at which point it will fall out of the news cycle and he can move on without saying something that would alienate his base of white supremacists.
