Noodlers ink btw.

Doing more writing by hand lately and was looking at some new ink. Now I’ve got to find other achivist ink cause I’m sure as hell not giving money to someone who dogwhistles about “western civilisation” and brands with that racist’s flag from the usa.

Sigh. I just liked the green.

As someone not Into Fountain Pens, it does kinda check out that there would be some significant overlap between the writing-like-a-victorian-aristocrat community and holding reactionary views.

You know how pens didn’t replace pencils? like they’re still useful because they write different. It’s just that.

Fountain pens are actually pretty modern, they were used till ~1970. You might be thinking of dip pens. They are attractive to use since you don’t need to put pressure on the page, unlike a biro, so if you’re prone to hand strain they are more comfortable. They can also be cheap, like 5 bucks.

1970 was over 50 years ago.

I don’t think I’ve used a pen of any kind in years. What little hand writing I do is either with a 0.3mm mechanical pencil or a stylus into Xournal++.

There’s a lot of good brands out there and some real fucking stinkers.

Noodlers is owned by a literal Nazi.

Goulet Pens owners are members of a christian fundamentalist church and donate large amounts of money there, of course the church is anti LGBT. Think westboro baptist types.

Kaweco used bogus lawsuits and legal pressure to put a competitor out of business, but they were able to rebrand instead.

TWSBI has a known issue and material defect in their pens and continue to sell them despite the common cracking problem. Their solution is free replacement parts but you have to pay shipping and I find that to be bullshit.

Me: Hi I’m looking to write without hand cramps

Clerk: Ah yes yes of course, we have a wide selection of pens, inks, and papers suitable for meeting any need.

Me: Wow that’s quite a selection, any recommendations to get started?

Clerk: Oh but of course, if we just start with the basic questions: Does Madame have a light or heavy touch? Are you interested in any particular style of script or application? Your opinions on, ah, significant happenings in the latter half of oh 1945?

Me: Sorry I think you lost me there. I’m just looking to take some notes, mark up some documents. Nothing terrifically particular.

      Clerk: And ah Madame’s opinions…?

      Me: confused stare

Clerk: Ah but perhaps you are shy, I am after all a stranger. Well many start here with the a lammy a brand known for quality German make covering the basics to the ostentatious. My cousin actually, he just got married and his groom, lovely man, gifted him this particular model on their honeymoon looks for reaction a lovely gesture no?

Me: Well that’s a very nice pen but I’m looking for something I won’t feel too bad about losing on a train.

      Clerk: frustrated sigh

Rohrer and Klinger’s sketch ink line are fountain pen friendly pigment inks. The ones I’ve tried have good waterproofness and good flow. And they’re on the cheaper side for pigment inks too.

Fuuuuuuuck noodlers, all the ink names and labels are like jerking off the US military or are straight up anti Semitic or shit like that

    • i dug around in the link and found this:

Cooker – a derogatory term for conspiracy theorist; according to the National Dictionary Centre, “a derogatory term for a person involved in protests against vaccine mandates, government lockdowns and a range of other issues perceived to be infringing on personal freedom”. Emerging during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, the word made the shortlist for “Word of the Year” in 2022. The term is also loosely associated with the far right. An explanation of the term given by an Australian in answer to a question on Twitter is that “It refers to someone whose brain has been cooked by overexposure to conspiracy theories and unhinged online rhetoric”.

just googling it was little help as hilariously there are a lot of cookers complaining online that they are being called “cooker” and that it isn’t a real phenomena and/or the slang lacks the appropriate pedigree for slang.

just seeing that makes me want to begin mass importation of this term to the US, because lmao. cookers gettin’ cooked.

Found this out after I bought a giant bottle of Heart of Darkness years ago

I’ll finish the bottle but it sucks because so many inks have an ingredient im allergic to (that one doesnt) and ink companies will outright ignore my emails about their ingredients so I have to buy samples to see if i can even use it

Wish I had a brand I knew was safe for me ooooooooooooooh

    What pen do you use?

      What pen do you use?

I used to use a lammy safari, it was ok. At some point the nib fell out and got lost and replacements are stupid expensive.

Tried a pilot and fount it scratchy and leaky. Got annoyed.

Bowed to the cultural and technical superiority of Chinese engineers and bought an asvine v126 recently after getting the shits with the pilot’s cap filling with ink again. By far both the cheapest and best pen I’ve used.

Only negative is that the feed rate is a little slow for really fast writing or sketching, but also it doesn’t blast your page or drip/leak when throwing a bag around so swings and roundabouts.

Man, how many choices do we make everyday without ever knowing what’s behind these actions, doing a simple thing like buying groceries, Flores, or in this case an ink can result in giving money to the wrong corporate or business.

It’s basically impossible to know who we help and I do think an obsession with purity is counterproductive. Effort would better go towards systemic change.

Still if you can buy your potatoes from farmer McGee who’s just a guy and farmer hitlerdiedtoosoon and you go with the latter you’re a bit fucked in the head.

I can’t know which of the 3 megacorps that own all my groceries has the worst shareholders but I can avoid buying ink from someone that thinks Rome was a high watermark and slavery is good actually.

All my Squeteague and Purple Martin… gone! all-my-apes-gone

Lol yeah this makes sense though- I got the impression they’re really into the civil war losers as well (impression was wrong, i misremembered ‘Lexington gray’ as being confederate-related.) It is good ink though - hopefully you’ll find another brand that scratches the itch.

At least the couple bottles I have will probably last a decade, then I’ll have to come back to this post and see what you’ve found.

Well fuck me, good thing I’ve never bought anything from them because of the import costs. And lmao the glazing of Milton Friedman on youtube. Maybe you should try Diamine, I haven’t gotten into archivist ink yet but I do like their greens.

I haven’t needed ink since I last bought some in like 2012 but the bottles are running dry now. Gonna have to look at what is around.

Seems like octopus makes colourful waterproof ones, but maybe not super suitable for fountain pens as they recommend cleaning between uses.

Bleh bleh and bleh once more. I lost one journal to heavy rain and I’m not having that happen again.

If I was less pretentious I could probably easily find a replacement but lacking a personality I am rather particular about faking one with interesting colours.

Basically all the companies that make pigment inks for fountain pens (or iron-gall inks for that matter) say that you should clean between uses and stuff, but I think it’s basically just ass covering so if you let your ink dry and clog up they can say it’s all on you.

But in my experience you absolutely don’t have to that often. I haven’t tried the Octopus fluids inks yet, I want to! But I use pigment inks from R&K, Platinum, and Sailor and haven’t needed to adopt any kind of special cleaning practice.

Ah, that could be a problem. Maybe use for a while in a sacrifice pen to see? I have some cheap Jin Haos that are actuality pretty good pens (thank you China), but if they get fucked up I’m not gonna feel too bad spending like $5 on another vs much more expensive pens

I’m confident I could clean the pen out, it’s more that I want my pen to “just work”. Like if I get it out of a drawer for the first time in a month and it’s clogged and needs a clean that makes the ink not suitable for being a pen ink, as that is a typical way a pen might be used.

Inks are expensive enough I’ll probably just find some reliable option. I’m just very annoyed, hunter green is a very nice green with good properties. Rarely clogged, flowed well, solid coverage but a fast dry, cleans off skin and plastic with just water but stains pages.

Couldn’t he have just been regular unpleasant and not a complete lunatic? I mean slavery… really? really? It’s fucking slavery mate.

That’s fair. I will say, three biggest factor for that isn’t going to be ink it’s going to be how well the pen’s cap seals. Same ink same conditions, different pens will dry out at very different rates.
