As an interviewee the worst interview I ever had was the one that landed me the job (that I mentioned elsethread) I quit by noon of the first day.

The interview itself was nothing special: a boss so full of himself that 99.44% of the interview was him talking himself up and the remaining 0.56% was asking questions of me. These are a dime a dozen in the tech world. The reason I hate the interview so much is it’s the one that got me that job and made me waste a half a day of my life.

As an interviewer the company I worked for got one of “those” CVs. You know the kind. The kind that will cite a job at 7-11 as a job involving inventory management, customer service, basic mechanical maintenance, etc. etc. etc. Puffing up everything, no matter how trivial, into something truly meaningful and significant. And then you add the cover letter that looks like the kind of thing that ChatGPT would churn out if you told it to go max purple … only this predates ChatGPT by a good 30 years, so an actual person wrote this!

The boss left the hiring pre-process to department heads and I suggested to them that we bring this specific guy in on a slow day so that one person after another could sit down in the interview with him and tighten the thumbscrews.

And the marketing manager went for it!

So when he came in, we spent the better part of a day (we supplied a good lunch, though) torturing this poor guy, making it clear one interview after another that he was not suited for the position.

And still he called back 48 hours later to see if we had a position for him.

I think that’s the worst I ever acted as an interviewer. It was delightful!

I don’t know anybody who uses SMS anymore except companies shoving ads at me. I only ever go in my messages app to select all and delete.

The worst was a woman who refused the advances of her manager and her performance reviews went from sterling to inadequate, leading her to be let go eventually.

Ooh, yeah, that’s a really good sign. Having no sense of humour about themselves is already a red flag, but pairing that with being mean to others?

In dates or other social situations:

• treating service staff badly
• talking about themselves to exclusion of all other topics
• ordering for you without your input
• acting as if they’re doing you a favour by dating you.
• quotes anything from incel, MGTOW, or other manosphere sources
  • especially Joe Rogan
• freeze peach fanatic
• uses words like “woke” or any of the other alt-right bugaboos without ironic intent
• acts like the word “feminist” is a dirty word
• uses racial slurs
• “Asian women are my fetish” (yes, I’ve had people—plural—use that with me)
• volunteers religious identity without it being the topic of discussion
• toxic negativity
• toxic positivity
• doesn’t read
• doesn’t listen to music
• has no opinions that aren’t slogans

… and a cast of thousands …

Wow. I’ve built up quite the suit of armour over the years.

After @Lady Butterfly mentioned in passing that writing up a bit of history on a woman I used to answer another question here might be welcome, I started writing up histories of fascinating strong women in history. This week I put out the fifth in my “Kick-Ass Women from HIstory” series (and my personal favourite so far) and the reaction has really made my week already.

Who knew that being long-winded and prone to blather could be so much fun!?

If you ever find yourself in Vancouver or Victoria, there are some VERY nice galleries with authentic modern Haida art covering most pocketbook levels. If you’ve got loads of cash, you can get one-of-a-kind pieces that seamlessly merge traditional forms with modern stylings, or you can get straight-up reproduction of classic forms, etc. for lower amounts of money right down to some really affordable nice prints.

I know that “let me Google that for you” is usually used as an insulting way of dealing with questions, but trust me, in this case, linking you to a search is just the easier way of doing things because there is so many pieces of cool Haida art it’s just easier for me to let you see it all in a gallery.

Yeah, both of them are simultaneously incredible (in the literal sense) and yet well-documented and studied, so real people. There are very few people like that in history of either gender.

I’ll be documenting a few more. 😉

I’m fascinated by the northern west coast tribes myself: Haida, and the like. And it’s almost all because the artwork just grabs me.
